Today marks 80 years since Victory over Japan Day—an historic moment that brought the Second World War to its close, though at an unimaginable cost.
As a veteran, I know firsthand the depth of sacrifice it takes to serve King (or Queen) and country. Yet I remain in awe of those who fought to the bitter end in the Pacific theatre, enduring unimaginable hardship, loss, and uncertainty. Their courage rippled through families, communities, and the nation, leaving a legacy that still shapes us today.
With each passing year, we lose more of the brave souls who bore witness to that time. That’s why it was especially humbling to meet some of the remaining veterans at Number 10 yesterday. Listening to their stories—raw, powerful, and deeply human—was a privilege I will never forget.
To those who served, and to the families and communities forever shaped by their courage: today, we honour you. Your legacy lives on in every life touched by peace.
