I'm absolutely thrilled to share that Euxton St Mary's Catholic Primary School will be one of the first schools in the country to offer a free breakfast club for all its students. This initiative is a fantastic step forward in ensuring children have the best possible start to their day.
Breakfast is crucial—it sets us up for the day ahead, and the benefits are well-documented. Breakfast clubs have been shown to boost school attendance and academic performance by ensuring children begin their day ready to learn. In fact, research from the Education Endowment Foundation reveals that students participating in breakfast programmes make an additional two months of progress in Maths, Reading, and Writing.
But the benefits don’t stop with the children. Breakfast clubs also provide valuable support to hardworking parents by cutting the cost of school mornings. Parents no longer need to worry about morning childcare, opening up more work opportunities, and they save on the cost of breakfast itself. On average, these clubs are estimated to save families £450 per year.
Euxton St Mary's is paving the way as one of the trial schools for this programme, helping to break down barriers to opportunity. The Department for Education will closely monitor the trial schools, learning from their experiences before rolling out the scheme to schools across England.
I am incredibly proud to be part of a Government that is determined to give children the best possible start in life. Thank you to everyone involved in this initiative—it is a true game-changer for children, parents, and communities alike.
