Today in Parliament, I addressed the challenges local councils face in setting meaningful budgets, a struggle exacerbated by the fragmented, short-term policies of the previous government. Drawing on my experience as the Leader of South Ribble Borough Council, I emphasised the urgent need for change.
I urged Ministers to ensure that tomorrow’s budget proposals put an end to the cycle of fragmented annual public sector funding allocations. Instead, I called for the reintroduction of meaningful, forward-thinking multi-year settlements that provide stability and enable councils to plan effectively for the future.
In response, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury acknowledged the significant pressures on local councils and committed to consolidating funding streams into the local government finance settlements. I was encouraged to hear that the Government is working towards implementing a multi-year financial settlement, which will offer much-needed stability and support for local authorities.
This is a positive step forward, and I will continue to advocate for measures that empower councils to deliver for their communities. Together, we can ensure a brighter, more stable future for local government.
