Knife crime has become a scourge on our society, and it's an issue that I take very seriously. It’s harming communities across the UK, including right here in South Ribble. We must do everything possible to protect our children and keep them safe.
In the UK, knife crime continues to be a significant concern. In the year ending March 2024, there were approximately 50,500 offences involving a sharp instrument in England and Wales. This represents a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year.
Specifically in South Ribble, there has been a notable impact. Recent data from the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network indicates a 13% decrease in knife crime incidents in the area. However, the fight against knife crime is far from over, and we must remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts to protect our community.
