Statement: Changes to Welfare Benefits

Statement from Paul Foster MP  Changes to Welfare Benefits

Dear Constituents,

Many of you have taken the time to contact me regarding your concerns about the Government's proposed welfare reforms.

I truly understand the concerns you have raised and want to assure you that I take these matters very seriously. The welfare system plays a vital role in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our society, and any proposed changes must be thoroughly scrutinised to ensure they do not cause undue harm to those in need.

I want to make it explicitly clear that I do not support any cuts to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

At present, nearly two million people are deemed to have Limited Capability for Work and Work Related Activity, and this number has almost quadrupled since the pandemic. Among them are approximately 160,000 young people aged 16-24 who find themselves in this challenging position. These individuals are on the highest rate of Universal Credit but may not be receiving the tailored support they need to explore opportunities or take steps toward employment.

It is clear something is not working and this current system in not sustainable.

The Green Paper on welfare reform, announced this Wednesday, includes some positive proposals, but I acknowledge that there are many areas requiring further consideration. It is important to highlight that these proposals are still at the consultation stage, which provides an opportunity for individuals and organisations to lobby the Government for change and improvement.

I will take the time to carefully review the proposals, listen to the concerns of constituents like yourself, and engage with those working on the front lines of benefits advice and support before making a full statement.

Any changes to the welfare system must aim to reduce poverty among disabled people, promote their independence, and help everyone reach their full potential.

The welfare system must enable disabled people to live independently while also being financially sustainable in the long term.

I will continue to monitor the Government's plans closely and ensure the voices of disabled people in South Ribble and beyond are heard throughout this process.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Foster MP signature
