Today in the House of Commons I was officially sworn in to Member of Parliament for South Ribble.
What is Swearing In ?
Members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords are required to pledge allegiance to the Crown before commencing their duties in Parliament. This solemn act takes place following an election, where individuals may choose to swear on a religious text or make a non-religious affirmation.
The commitment to the Crown holds significant importance in British public life, akin to demonstrating loyalty to the state. By legal mandate, all Members of Parliament and Lords are obligated to swear fealty to the Crown.
It is imperative that MPs fulfill this requirement before engaging in any parliamentary activities. Failure to do so may result in a £500 fine and potential dismissal from their position. The same protocol applies to members of the House of Lords.
