Leyland Motors and Their Role in the World Wars

Updated: Mar 13

I had the pleasure of visiting the Leyland Historical Society's Heritage Centre, which has just secured another three months on Hough Lane. For anyone in Leyland or the surrounding area with an interest in local history, I highly recommend a visit—there is so much to discover about the rich heritage of our community.

As Remembrance Sunday approaches, it was particularly moving to learn about the pivotal role Leyland Motors played during both World Wars. During the First World War, the company entirely shifted its production to support the war effort, manufacturing approximately 5,932 vehicles for the British forces, including essential trucks and military vehicles. At its peak, Leyland Motors employed over 3,000 individuals to meet the growing demands.

In the Second World War, Leyland Motors continued its vital contributions by producing military vehicles such as the Cromwell tank and medium-to-large trucks like the Hippo and Retriever. Their work was instrumental in supporting British military operations during these critical times.

Reflecting on their history serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary resilience and adaptability of companies like Leyland Motors and the factories across South Ribble. While this weekend we rightly honour those who served on the front lines, it is also important to remember and celebrate those at home who contributed in remarkable ways to the war efforts.

As we pause to remember and give thanks, I encourage everyone to reflect on the many sacrifices made by our community and the powerful legacy of service that continues to shape our lives today.
