Funding Secured for Flood Alleviation in South Ribble

Croston Village
Croston Village

I am delighted to announce that we have secured £10.5 million for the Preston & South Ribble Flood Alleviation Works. This substantial investment will significantly enhance our flood defences, providing better protection for our homes, businesses, and community infrastructure.

Croston Village Flood Alleviation Scheme

In addition to the major funding for Preston & South Ribble, I am very happy to announce that an extra £130,000 has been secured for the Croston Village Flood Alleviation Scheme. This scheme, developed in partnership with the Environment Agency, Chorley Council, and Lancashire County Council, aims to protect the village from the devastating effects of flooding.

The Croston scheme includes an upstream flood storage area on the River Yarrow, capable of retaining up to 1.3 million cubic meters of water. This storage area, along with a 600-meter earth embankment, will reduce the risk of flooding for 438 properties in the village.

Douglas Natural Flood Management Delivery

Furthermore, we have secured additional funding for the Douglas Natural Flood Management (NFM) delivery. This innovative approach focuses on using natural processes to reduce flood risk. The NFM measures include the restoration of floodplains, the creation of wetlands, and the planting of trees and vegetation to slow down water flow and increase water absorption.

These natural solutions not only help manage flood risk but also enhance biodiversity and improve water quality. The Douglas NFM project is a testament to our commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly flood management practices.

Meeting with the Environment Agency

I will be meeting with the Environment Agency Regional Director in Croston to review the current flood defences and discuss necessary improvements. This meeting will ensure that we are taking all possible measures to protect our communities from future flooding events. I will keep you updated on the outcomes of this meeting and any further developments.
