Thank you to everyone who braved the weather to join me on Friday at the Civic Centre to discuss the proposed Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. Over 60 residents attended in person, and I have received hundreds of emails on this matter. Your time, insights, and perspectives have been invaluable, and I now feel confident that when I vote, after the debate in the House of Commons at the end of this week, it will truly reflect the spirit of my constituents.
The discussion was an emotional and thought-provoking hour. I deeply appreciated hearing from a diverse range of constituents—those with personal experiences of losing loved ones, health professionals, and individuals with strong beliefs. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on such a sensitive and emotive subject. For those who chose not to speak, your presence and respect were equally meaningful.
At this stage, I have not yet made up my mind. I want to hear the views of my colleagues in the Commons chamber before reaching a decision. This will be the second reading of the bill, and there is still a long way to go in terms of scrutiny. Following this stage, the bill will move to the committee stage, then the third reading, and finally, it will pass through the House of Lords for further examination. In short, it is still early days, and there is much work ahead.
I will ensure that my constituents are informed of how I intend to vote—or have voted—once I am certain in my decision. Thank you again for your engagement and for contributing to this important conversation. Together, we are shaping the future of our community and ensuring that all voices are heard.
