When complete Asland Walks Energy Park will produce enough power from wind and solar to power a whole village!

Around 5% of the electricity generated will be supplied directly to Bretherton, and could exceed the village’s total energy needs. helping to reduce bills and reinvest value locally. This is a project that undeniably has real benefits for the local community.

It was a real pleasure to visit the proposed Energy Park in Bretherton and see first-hand the ambition behind this genuinely exciting local renewable energy project.

I was struck by just how forward-thinking this scheme is. It combines wind and solar, with the energy they produce stored in state-of-the-art batteries. The site will generate over 21MW of clean energy. With around 17,000 solar panels and a 4.2MW wind turbine, at full power, this could generate enough electricity to power a whole village, making a real contribution to powering local homes and businesses while cutting reliance on fossil fuels.

Also, it’s really encouraging that this isn’t just about energy. The plans include environmental enhancements, new green space, and a public park for residents to enjoy, alongside thousands of new trees and improved habitats for wildlife. It's a real testament to how development and nature can go hand in hand.

Projects like this matter now more than ever. In recent years, we’ve all seen just how exposed the UK is to global energy shocks; from the war in Ukraine to instability in the Middle East, which are driving up costs for families and businesses.

That’s why the Government’s new energy strategy, announced just yesterday, is so significant and a step in the right direction. It focuses on breaking the link between volatile gas prices and electricity costs, and accelerating the shift to clean, homegrown energy so we’re less dependent on international markets.

Schemes like Asland Walks are exactly what that vision looks like on the ground: local, renewable, resilient energy that helps protect households from future shocks while supporting the transition to net zero.
