Michael O’Hare lost his sister, Majella, when she was tragically shot in 1976 during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. She was just 12 years old, not yet even a teenager. I can’t begin to imagine the grief of losing a sibling, especially in such horrific circumstances.
So today, it was a real honour to meet Michael, and to see how, out of unimaginable loss, a powerful legacy has been created in Majella’s memory through ‘Troubles, Tragedy & Trauma’.
Known as TTT, the charity works to raise awareness of the deep and lasting pain caused by the Troubles, highlight the ongoing legacy issues that victims and families still face, encourage reconciliation between communities, and promote positive mental wellbeing for all those affected.
Michael founded the charity in 2016 and remains a committed trustee. His mission resonates deeply with me, both as a veteran and through my parliamentary work, including on legacy legislation through the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill.
We must continue to stand with victims, their families, and our veterans, and keep working, however difficult it may be, towards truth, justice and reconciliation. It won’t be easy, but we must never give up hope that one day we can get there.
