Happy St George's Day

This is “Saint George for England”, I walk beneath this mosaic almost every single day when I’m in Westminster on my way through to the House of Commons.

It’s a striking piece of art, designed by Edward John Poynter and created in 1870. It shows St George standing over the dragon, holding the Cross of St George, a symbol that has come to represent England for centuries.

It’s one of four mosaics in Central Lobby depicting the patron saints of the United Kingdom, right at the heart of where MPs meet, pass through, and where constituents come to raise the issues that matter most to them.

Like so many of the hundreds of artworks inside the Palace of Westminster, it’s easy to pass by without a second glance, especially when you’re focused on the day ahead.

On a busy day, it’s easy to miss. But on St George’s Day, it’s a reminder of the history, identity and traditions that continue to shape our country.
